Planning and Preparation

The first step is planning your artificial lawn project.  Measure the area in square metres.  Use this measurement to calculate the amount of weed membrane, underlay, shock pad, aggregates and synthetic grass required for the project.  Proper measurement ensures ordering of correct product amounts.

Remove unwanted real grass, weeds, soil and clay from the area where you want to lay your new fake garden.  The tools of choice for the DIY enthusiast include a spade and wheelbarrow.  A team of installation professionals will complete this process quicker using a proper turf cutter.  It is vital to assess the drainage of the area.  Fake grass requires proper drainage.

Lay the correct subbase next.  The manufacturer’s recommendations, together with the style of fake grass chosen, will determine the amount and type of subbase required.

Add sharp sand on top of the subbase next.  Added correctly, the sand will bind with the subbase.  The sand and subbase need to be compact and level.  To compact and level the ground, professional installers will use a vibrating plate or roller.

The addition of a weed membrane is important.  This will keep your artificial lawn looking its best for years.  The weed membrane goes on top of the sand and subbase.  Roll out the sheets of membrane and cut it to fit, using a sharp knife or Stanley knife.

The next step in the fake grass installation process is putting down shock pad or another type of underlay.  Next, if required, add the desired frame to fix the artificial grass to.  Please note, to allow water to run off the fake turf, the edging should not be higher than the final grass line.

Installation Process

Before laying the artificial grass, careful planning is necessary.  Artificial Lawns Perth and Dundee recommend laying the grass with the pile going towards the house or main feature for a natural look.  Ensure the pile of each piece of synthetic grass runs in the same direction.  Before you cut the fake grass, take the time to roll it out and position it, to ensure you achieve the best fit.  Once you are happy that the pile runs in the same direction, leave the artificial grass for a few hours, or overnight, to acclimatise and allow any creases to fall out.  Do not rush this process.

It is now time to lay the artificial grass.  Trim the synthetic grass to the required shape.  Use a sharp knife to cut the fake grass.  Place the edges together, to join two or more pieces of fake grass, and apply joining tape to the seams, then add a bond.

Brush kiln dried sand into the pile of the artificial grass with a stiff broom.  This process will encourage the pile to stand upright.
